Yian Kut-ku
The Yian Kut-Ku is a fire-breathing bird wyvern. They are rather small compared to other wyverns and resemble giant chickens in both manner and form. The name "Kut-Ku" may come from the word "cuckoo" for its bird-like characteristic and appearance. They inhabit the Forest and Hills, Jungle, and Swamps.
Yian Kut-Ku are the weakest of the boss wyverns but they are rather fast wyverns. Many hunters defeat the Kut-Ku as their first wyvern. While experienced hunters usually have no challenge in defeating it, first-timers may have some difficulty due to the Kut-Ku's speed.
They are belligerent towards hunters, and use their fire attacks and pecks to defend their territory. If attacked before fully landing, it may opt to circle the area and swoop down on its foes. Though their attacks and speed make them more formidable than other small-sized monsters, they leave themselves open to attack more often than the average wyvern.
Due to their highly developed ears, Yian Kut-Ku have great hearing. Their ears are effective for hearing prey and enemies outside their range of sight, but because of their oversensitivity, they are also vulnerable to explosive sounds. There are three ways to take advantage of this vulnerability: Sonic Bombs, Barrel Bombs, and Crag/Cluster Shots. Dizzied upon hearing an explosive sound, Yian Kut-Ku are stunned and become open to attack, but may become enraged once the dizziness subsides. Enough attacks to its head will break its ears. Once its ears are broken, the Yian Kut-Ku is no longer as susceptible to explosive sounds.
The Yian Kut-Ku is weakest to Water, Thunder, and Ice. Depending on the weapon class, there are some methods that may prove more effective than others. For example, if using Dual Blades, try using Demonic Dance on its body with a Water weapon. If using the Longsword, try slashing at its wings with a Thunder weapon. For the Hammer, Hunting Horn, and Great Sword, try hitting its head with an Ice weapon. For a Bow, fire as many arrows as possible at its face.
The Yian Kut-Ku's ears fold back when it is near death. This normally means that it will try to run away to recover its health.
Blue Yian Kut-ku
The Blue Yian Kut-Ku is a blue subspecies of the Yian Kut-Ku. Although they are usually smaller than their pink counterparts, they are more aggresive and stronger. They share an evolutionary lineage with the Yian Garuga. The Blue Yian Kut-Ku behaves in almost the same way as the normal Yian Kut-Ku.
The weakest spot on the Blue Yian Kut-Ku is the wings. They are most affected by weapons with Water damage. Their ears are very sensitive, so throwing a sonic bomb at it would cause it to get dizzied, and will also have a chance to drop a shiny. Any kind of explosives will also have the same effect, but after doing stunning a Blue Yian Kut-Ku from a sonic bomb or explosives, they will instantly go into rage mode (this also applies to a regular Yian Kut-Ku).
Blue Yian Kut-Ku materials are used to make strong Bowguns such as the Blue Yian Kut-Ku Cannon, a powerful version of the Yian Kut-Ku Cannon. The Blue Yian Kut Ku, however, is quite timid and relatively easy to defeat.
Yian Garuga
The Yian Garuga is a subspecies of the Yian Kut-Ku and the Blue Yian Kut-Ku. This wyvern is not only very different in physical aspects, but also very different in behavior, abilities and hunting strategies. Physically speaking, they are purple, have a body covered with spikes and have extremely hard shells. Their tail spikes are toxic enough that one tail swipe can poison hunters, and unlike the Kut-Ku, the Garuga is unaffected by Sonic Bombs, which can make hunting it a bit more difficult than the other Kut-Ku species. These creatures are very aggressive and seem to always be enraged. They are also much faster and can roar in a loud sonic "tune".
Gypceros
Gypceros is a medium sized Bird Wyvern, most noted for its poison, its ability to knock out others with the lightcrystal (which can be broken) on its forehead, and its turkey-like way of charging. It's tail seems to be of an elastic material similar to rubber. Note when planning for a Gypceros battle that it is immune to Shock Traps due to its Rubbery Hide, so bring Pitfall Traps
The Gypceros attacks in a drunken manner, often staggering wildly forward and hacking out balls of toxins, and thus can sometimes intimidate an inexperienced hunter.
Purple Gypceros
The Purple Gypceros is a subspecies of the Gypceros. Although essentially the same in behavior and fighting, the Purple Gypceros have different coloring and are more aggressive. The Gypceros' colors are blue and pink, while the Purple Gypceros' are purple and green. The Purple Gypceros provides a more futuristic armor set and has the right materials for some decent weaponry.
The size and health of this sub-species of Gypceros is considerably larger than their normal counterparts. Furthermore, they are more prone to feigning death because of their increased health levels.
Hypnocatrice
Hypnocatrice is a small-sized, orange-feathered bird. It has the ability to put hunters to sleep with sleeping gas. Compared to other Bird Wyverns, it has more control of its body movements. Its fighting style is very similar to the Yian Kut-Ku's. It has an attack where it jumps repeatedly at the hunter, attacking with its claws.
Bright Hypnocatrice
The "Bright Hypnocatrice" is a color-swap of the Hypnocatrice. It debuted in Monster Hunter Frontier alongside the Red Lavasioth. It is thus far exclusive to Monster Hunter Frontier. The Bright Hypnocatrice is a regular female Hypnocatrice during the mating season; the purpose of the blue plumage is to attract a male. It is speculated that this species has an incredible mating dance, similar to that of the peafowl.
Azure Hypnocatrice
The Azure Hypnocatrice is a color-swap of the Hypnocatrice. It debuted in Monster Hunter Frontier alongside the Akura Vashimu, and is thus far exclusive. The Azure Hypnocatrice is stronger than its other two counterparts, with a different moveset.
It is only found in one area, the Great Forest Peak, high above the Great Forest. The only other monster ever seen there is White Espinas.
Qurupeco
Qurupeco is a monster featured in Monster Hunter 3. It has a trumpet-like crest, a large red air sac, and a flat fan-like tail that turns red when it is enraged and bright green when fatigued. It uses its vocal abilities to summon aid from various monsters. The Qurupeco's soft crest and throat sac makes the Qurupeco a very delicate monster.
When its air sack is inflated, it is susceptible to loud noises, much like the Yian Kut-Ku. This makes Sonic Bombs effective at stopping some of its abilities, leaving the interrupted Qurupeco disoriented for a moment.
