These are the weapon types available to all the players.
Sword&Shield: The Sword and Shields, also known as SnS were first introduced in Monster Hunter. These weapons are small and accompanied by a shield that allows you to block against most attacks. Although causing a small amount of damage compared to most weapons, they are very fast and easy to travel with. Many SnSs are infused with status effects (Poison, Stun, Sleep, Fire, etc...) that make up for their low attack. When another blade is used in place of a shield, the combination is called Dual Swords.
Dual Swords: Dual Swords, also known as DS, are similiar to Sword and Shield but more offensive and less defensive than SnS. Same as SnS, DS attacks cause a small amount of damage but DS attacks even faster than SnS. DS users can enter into Demonization mode. When Demonization mode is activated, users gain the ability to resist Large Windpress, attacks can be linked into a never-ending combo and the Demon Dance attribute, a powerful combo that cannot be bounced. To balance these bonuses, stamina is gradually drained while staying in this form (although Power Juices/Mega Juices are able to nullify this effect). Similar to SnS, DS are infused with status effects to increase their killer combos. In Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Dual Swords are able to wield dual elements in one weapon.
(Demonization mode only lasts 5 posts so it's not overused. Cool down is another 5 posts)
Switch Axe Switch Axe, also known as the Slash Axe. There are two modes: Axe and Sword. Transformation between the two are done by pressing a switch on the haft. While the weapon is drawn, the running speed in Axe-form is similar to that of a Long Sword; while Sword-form's running speed is similar to the Great Sword. Attack wise, Sword-form is much faster than the Great Sword. While in sword form, your weapon will not bounce off the hides of monsters. Sword-form can only be sustained for a limited time. Once its energy bar has been depleted, it will need to be reloaded. It has built-in Phials that automatically activate once switched to sword form. (Swordform lasts 3 posts, cooldown is 2 posts)
Greatsword: Great Swords, also known as GS are large, slow weapons that were first introduced in Monster Hunter. They have three main attacks: the sideswipe, the upswing, and the downstrike. Hitting a monster with the middle of the blade, also known as the sweet spot, causes a damage bonus. They now have a sub-category of weapons known as the Tachi, or Long Sword.
Longsword: Long Swords, also called LS or Tachi, are long, slender blades that move very quickly. In Monster Hunter, the Long Swords had existed, but performed exactly the same as the Great Swords. A gauge now fills in power over several strikes in quick succession and are used for the Spirit Combo attack, and when full, hunters achieve a power boost. Alternately, the gauge may be left full for an attack bonus and making any other attack less likely to bounce off the target. However, because of their fragile nature, they lack the ability to block like a GS..
Lance: Lances are long weapons that can strike from a distance. The lance is always accompanied by a large shield which generally grants a powerful defense against most attacks. Although slow and difficult to travel with, the weapon's damage output can be impressive when used by skilled players. Lances have different moves, such as the upstab, pierce, and jousting attack. Along with the SnS, lances are one of the only weapons that can attack and block at the same time(however you cannot eat with lance drawn).
Hammer: Hammers are large, heavy weapons which are capable of dealing the most raw damage in a single true combo. Their tremendous size only slightly hinders mobility, but hunters are still able to run with them, unlike the Great Sword and Lance. These fierce weapons have several moves: a simple pound and a related combo, a "golf" swing, a revolving spin, and a charge-up attack that crushes anything it connects with. Hitting tough monsters on the head causes stun.
Hunting Horn: The Hunting Horns', also known as HH, are similar to the Hammer only in that it does impact damage and can stun a monster when it connects with the head. It is far weaker than the hammer and does much less damage, even on those attacks which the two appear to share, such as the Superpound on the Hunting Horn. What makes the Horn different from the hammer (apart from its vast inferiority in terms of damage) is its Recital ability. Each Horn has a different set of three color specific notes .These notes can be combined in various ways to create various effects, which mimic items such as Power Seed and Psychoserum, among others.
Light Bowgun: Light Bowguns, also known as Lbowgun or Lbg, are ranged weapons that allows hunters to run with the weapon drawn and attack quickly due to its light weight. Although hunters have the advantage of being able to run around, Light Bowguns are generally low in attack power. Light Bowguns are original weapons first seen in Monster Hunter.
Medium Bowgun: Medium Bowguns, also known as Mbowgun or Mbg. It is categorized as Medium by its weight. It is the middle weapon in the bowgun category being heavier than the Light bowgun and lighter than the Heavy Bowgun. It has more kick to it than the Light bowgun.
Heavy Bowgun: Heavy Bowguns, also known as Hbowgun or Hbg, are ranged weapons that pack a powerful punch, but due to their size and weight, does not allow hunters to run when drawn. Most commonly, heavy bowguns are able to use the majority of ammo types, and typically, the stronger or higher-level the bowgun, the stronger the ammo types it is able to use. Hunters are now able to equip Heavy Bowguns with a shield. Equipping a power barrel (long barrel in MH1) will increase the accuracy of the bowgun along with its attack power, meanwhile equipping the shield will enable the "Autoguard" skill, compensating the movement restriction from the weapon. Heavy Bowguns are original weapons first seen in Monster Hunter.
Bow:Now, Bows are very fast weapons, and as it's likely in Monster Hunter, that means they would lack in damage, but that is not entirely true. We have to take in mind that there are several factors that will affect the damage that results in using a ranged attack with a bow. The bow's attacks count as piercing damage. This is a great help when trying to break a monster's specific areas. However, the melee attack with an arrow counts as slashing type, which is ideal for cutting tails.
